Phase 2, Blog Post #5: Futureworks Makerspace

At 15000 square feet, Futureworks Makerspace unique is the largest makerspace in New York, but it’s also a community-based makerspace. How is unusual or unique? (Some additional research may be required to get some context.)

Being community-based as a makerspace is unique and very important, especially in the city. Despite how many people inhabit the city, it can be the easiest place to feel alone and lost. Futureworks Makerspace is focused on being community-based which is inviting for those who feel like the city may be drowning them and need community as well as a space to let their creativity run free and create. The Makerspace being community-based is also important because it doesn’t foster competition like I feel many places that do this kind of work (project based work with shared space) and entrepreneur labs/clubs do. This allows those within the community to feel comfortable enough to continue creating and… paying!

How does the Futureworks Makerspace support diversity in the maker community and in New York City?

Futureworks Makerspace supports diversity in the maker community and in NYC by offering a number of programs and events for people of all ages including an education program for K-12 STEAM students. What is interesting is how pricey the lab and equipment is to use / become a member. I don’t feel that’s inclusive for those coming from more underprivileged socioeconomic backgrounds.
